What I learnt from 18 years as a Real Estate Salesperson
After being in the industry for over 18 years, there are many moments in my career that shaped me to be who I am today. In this article I will share some of my most impactful personal experiences in my business.
1. Self-Realization
When I was doing sales in Events Management in the past, I used to be someone who's a "day by day" person. That meant that I live each day as it is - without any planning. I only worked with things where I was familiar with, so I didn't put any effort to learn anything new. As a result, I was stuck in my life and career, with no improvement whatsoever.
It was only when I hit my then 'lowest point', that I realized how much I needed to change.
That was when I decided to take some time off to "re-evaluate" my life and find what I truly wanted. The moment where I achieved self-realization was a huge one for me. It was then I started taking ownership and responsibility for my life. I was ready to go back into my career, but this time, with a completely different mindset.
2. Taking Ownership
The term 'taking ownership' means a lot to me. When I first entered the real estate industry, I was fresh out of my previous career, and really didn't know what I was doing. Thankfully, I had a great team of mentors who helped me learn the ropes. The most important thing they taught me was to take ownership of my business. This meant being proactive in finding solutions to problems, and always putting in the effort to gather more resources.
It was a tough lesson to learn, but it has stuck with me throughout my career of 18 years. And it's something that I impart on all of my own team members. No matter if you are a junior, senior, have a small team, or even built a big team, it's in my beliefs that as long as you take ownership of your business, you are guaranteed to do well.
3. Making Business Plans
After going through a period of self-realization, I also had to confront my weaknesses. I realized it's natural that our minds get stuck when we are faced with our weaknesses. It led me to a non-stop cycle of overthinking, and no real action being taken. I was stuck in this phase for quite a long while.
I needed to find a way to work on my weaknesses and still move forward. I tried many methods but to no avail. What really stuck out to me was when I started creating business plans with measurable goals and timelines. This helped me stay accountable to myself, as well as keep my focus on what was important.
Now, I focus most of my time on my business plans. This ensures I keep planning, taking action, trying new ideas and concepts, and following up with things that constantly move me forward. Whenever needed, I am not afraid to seek help from mentors and people around me.
4. Growth and Breakthrough
Everyone has their own mental blocks, egos and beliefs. I am no different. When I was starting out in my career, I used to be very submissive to people I don't like, because I was worried of potentially offending them. I thought I was protecting myself, but it ended up harming myself instead. Because I felt like I didn't see any value in myself and it caused me to lose my self-respect.
I started working on myself and studying personal growth and development. I soon realized that by changing my mindset, I could breakthrough any limitations that were holding me back. I started practicing being more assertive and setting better boundaries. This was a huge breakthrough for me and it allowed me to start growing my business in new ways.
When I stopped trying to be a people-pleaser, I started treating myself with respect. This in turn, helped me treat others around me with more respect for their time, effort and self. I realized that if you value and respect yourself, and you show it through your actions, the right people will stay, because they equally value and respect you.
This was one of the first ever breakthroughs I've experienced in my life, and since then, I ensure I keep moving forward in my life, looking for more growth, for my next breakthrough. Whatever is working for me, I will focus on it. And whatever isn't working, I'll cut it out of my life. It's as they say: "Sometimes, you gotta do what's necessary".
5. Challenging yourself
I believe in having the mindset of an entrepreneur, no matter what you are doing. Being an entrepreneur means being responsible for your own success. It means finding solutions to solve whatever problems you encounter. And it means not waiting for "things to happen", because we make things happen.
When I was serious about 'making it' in this business, I was always looking for ways to challenge myself. I would take on projects and responsibilities that were tough, or that other people said were 'impossible'. And because of this, I learned how to be creative and resourceful. This helped me achieve more success in my career, and it also helped me develop a strong work ethic.
I love taking challenges, and I love challenging people to be better. I encourage my team to do the same, because it makes all of us better. There were countless moments in our team where we completed many projects that seemed impossible at the start, but we did it anyway. They were huge undertakings, and really pushed us to our limits. But when we did it, it was an incredible feeling for everyone.
These experiences taught me that if you want something bad enough, and you are willing to work for it, you can achieve anything.
6. Never leave anyone behind
Your team and environment is one of the biggest factors that will impact your success and results. This is why I strongly believe in the value of teamwork, an empowering team, and never "leaving" anyone behind.
One of the things we practice in our BSA team culture is that we always have each other's back. If someone falls behind, we do whatever it takes to make sure they get back up and continue moving forward. We know that everyone has different strengths and weaknesses, so we try to utilize everyone's strengths to create a well-rounded, successful team.
This is also why I spend so much time, money and effort to build up our BSA virtual studio, where we constantly fill it up with team assets to build a strong infrastructure for our support system. We have things like regular training sessions, technological resources, proven scripts, and many more. We're always adding on to our assets, so we can always give our teammates the best. These are 6 personal experiences that I felt impacted me greatly in my 18 year journey as a Real Estate Salesperson and Real Estate Team Leader. I hope they are useful to you in your career and life.
