How To Lead And Manage A Team Of Self-Employed Individuals

When it comes to the Real Estate business, it's important to know that everyone in your team is self-employed. As such, it is more important than ever to know how to lead and manage a team of self-employed people. Those who can effectively do so will be at a distinct advantage in today's market.

Leading a team of self-employed individuals can be both challenging and rewarding. On the one hand, you need to be able to motivate and inspire your team members to achieve their goals. On the other hand, you also need to respect their independence and allow them the space to grow and develop their own methods and processes. While my article is focused on the perspective of leading a team of Real Estate agents, the same can be followed for all self-employed individuals in other industries.


Here are 5 ways in my experience for leading a successful team of self-employed individuals:

1. It's Not All About Money

While most Real Estate agents first join the industry from the promises of riches and the flashy lifestyle, it's important to remember that money isn't everything. While it's certainly important to keep an eye on the targets and make sure that your team is meeting their sales goals, there are other factors that are just as important.

In fact, if team members join a team with the sole purpose of making money, they are likely to be disappointed. The Real Estate business is about much more than that. It's about helping people find the right home, negotiating the best price, and making sure the transaction goes smoothly. It's also about building relationships and providing excellent customer service. It's about being there for your clients through the ups and downs of the market. If you're in it for the long term, then the Real Estate business is for you.

Those who are passionate about helping others and providing excellent service are more likely to be successful in this business.


2. Culture

A successful team of Real Estate agents is built on a foundation of trust, respect, and cooperation. As the leader of a team of self-employed individuals, it's important to foster a culture that values these things. This means creating an environment where everyone feels like they are part of something larger than themselves and where they can openly communicate with one another. It also means setting clear expectations and providing adequate support.

By focusing on team culture, you can create an environment that leads to success. People who feel like they are part of a positive, supportive team are more likely to be productive and successful. In turn, this can lead to more business and more profits for everyone involved. So if you want your team of Real Estate agents to thrive, focus on creating a strong team culture.


3. Values

When it comes to leading a team of self-employed individuals, team and individual values are essential for success. After all, your team is only as strong as the values that guide it. By instilling a set of strong values in your team, you'll help to create an empowering environment for everyone in it.

Values help to define who we are and what we stand for. They provide a framework for our behavior, and they guide us when we're faced with tough choices. As the leader of a team of self-employed individuals, it's important that you take the time to define the values that will guide your team.

✅ What qualities do you want your team to be known for?

✅ What principles do you want to uphold?

✅ What type of people do you want your team to be?

Once you've answered these questions, communicate your answers to your team members and make sure that everyone is on the same page. By upholding a strong set of values in your team, you'll lay the foundation for a successful and cohesive group.

4. Support

As anyone who has ever led a team of self-employed individuals knows, team support is essential. While self-employed are independent and responsible for their own work, they still need support from their team in order to be successful. This support can take many forms, from offering advice and guidance to providing access to training resources and growth opportunities. By taking the time to invest in your team, you will create a more united team that is better equipped to achieve their goals.

Team members who feel supported are more likely to be satisfied with their work, find fulfilment in what they do, and less likely to leave the team. Therefore, providing support is not only beneficial for the team as a whole, but it also helps to improve retention rates.

Additionally, a good team leader will create a positive and supportive team environment by:

✅ Offering regular feedback - both positive and constructive - on tasks

✅ Encouraging open communication among team members

✅ Respecting individual differences

✅ Recognizing and celebrating individual and team accomplishments

✅ Being available to answer questions and provide assistance as needed

By providing adequate support and creating a positive team environment, a leader can ensure that their team of self-employed workers has greater chances of achieving success.


5. Vision & Faith

A team is only as strong as its vision. A clear, shared vision is essential for any team that wants to achieve big things. Without a shared vision, team members will quickly become bogged down in the day-to-day grind and lose sight of the larger goal. A good team vision should be something that everyone can rally behind and strive to achieve. It should be something that motivates and inspires team members to do their best work. A strong team vision can help a team weather any storm and come out stronger on the other side.

It is also important to instil a sense of faith in the team members, because it takes belief and trust to succeed as a team. Self-employed individuals often have to put themselves out there, take risks and often have to deal with a lot of rejection and failure. Without faith in each other, the team, and the vision, it would be very difficult to accomplish anything - both individually, and as a team.
